Speed Networking Mixer @ Wokcano!

leave a comment »

Join us for a fun evening with a purpose!

The premise is simple:
Now more than ever, it’s been a challenge to get big corporate and individual donations. So in an effort to raise scholarship funds, PAA is hosting a speed networking mixer (think “speed dating” but better!). All proceeds will be pooled together in the form of a scholarship to be awarded to one deserving UCLA student later this year.

-Social networking open to everyone 21 & up – singles and non-singles.
-Why not party, mingle, (re)connect, and forget about work while contributing to a good cause?
-Share this invite & get your significant other, friends, and networks to come!
-Expect to meet new faces and make social, professional, and (maybe even) personal connections!
-If you’ve never participated in this type of event before, no worries because most of us haven’t either!

RSVP on our Evite here!

A $10 tax-deductible donation is requested & appreciated. You also have the option to donate $25+ which includes free PAA membership for 1 year.

Saturday, February 20, 7:00PM

Wokcano Restaurant and Lounge
33 South Fair Oaks Ave.
Pasadena, CA 91105

Christmas Eve in the Philippines is traditionally celebrated with a “Noche Buena” (Good Night); a dinner for family to gather and eat together as they rejoice and feast on the Nativity of the birth of Christ.

The term “Noche Buena” and the tradition itself started way back when the Philippines was a Spanish colony. It continues to pass from generation to generation, celebrating the festivity of Christmas (Pasko, in Filipino term).

How to Celebrate a Filipino Christmas….

leave a comment »

eHow has everything: How to Celebrate a Filipino Christmas

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  1. Play Filipino Christmas tunes such as “Pasko na Sinta Ko.”
  2. Attend “Miso de Gallo,” which is a Mass held before dawn on December 16 to mark the start of the nine-day novena.
  3. Use “parols,” or star-shaped lanterns that have candles inside, to light your way to the church in the dark.
  4. Purchase native foods such as “puto bumbong” (rice steamed inside a “bumbong,” or small bamboo tube), “bibingka” (rice cake with salted eggs and fresh coconut meat) and “suman” (steamed rice wrapped in banana leaves) outside the church.
  5. Expect “cumbancheros,” or carolers, to visit your house with musical instruments to serenade you and your neighbors.
  6. Expect to watch the “Panunuluyan” in the town plaza on Christmas Eve. This is a re-enactment of the Holy Couple’s journey to Bethlehem and portrays the lack of hospitality they encountered along the way.
  7. Attend midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. This is always a special event that children wear new clothes to.
  8. Gather with friends and relatives for “Noche Buena” after the Mass ends. This is a festive meal followed by the exchange of gifts, which lasts through the next morning.
  9. Arrange to visit family and friends on Christmas Day.
  10. Remember that the holiday season draws to a close with the Feast of the Three Kings on the first Sunday of January; the kings followed a star to find the manger where Jesus was born.
